Stock Option Planning

We encourage clients to consider that employer stock options are a current asset that is one of your financial resources. By focusing on the current value of the options, clients can make informed decisions as to the risk and benefit of various option strategies.

We work with clients to develop and implement a strategy for managing employer stock options. Since 1996 Grubman Financial Consulting has specialized in tax planning and divestment strategies of employer stock options.

Stock option planning helps clients understand the tax and investment implications of their option decisions. We help clients implement a regular divestment plan offering implementation assistance throughout.

We have seen and corrected significant errors in tax returns prepared by other accountants. It is a common area of misunderstanding. When we prepare your returns you will be confident that your transactions have been accurately reported.

The tax treatment of Non-Qualified Options (NQs), Incentive Stock Options (ISOs) and Employer Stock Purchase Program shares (ESPPs) is complex. Few people have the time and expertise needed to plan and report the tax liabilities of stock option transactions.

We explain the risks and advantages of exercising NQs or ISOs, the tax implications of same-day-sales of options, holding period requirements for beneficial tax treatment, estimated tax payment implications and the effect of ISO exercises on the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).

After working with clients to develop a stock option plan we help our clients implement and adjust the plan on a continuing basis.
